It’s genuinely insane how many different mattress sizes are available nowadays. You’d think this was a good thing, but it’s made a relatively simple decision far harder than it needs to be. Choosing a bed for your bedroom is now very tough as you’ve got to consider what bed-size works the best.

So, to help you come to the best conclusion, we’ll go through a few of the most common mattress sizes and see where they make the most sense.

Twin XL

A Twin XL is a bed for one adult to sleep in, measuring 39 x 80 inches. Thus, it only really makes sense if you have a small bedroom. Many people opt for this in a child’s bedroom, or it can provide some extra sleeping space in a spare room. Of course, if you’re looking for a bed in the master bedroom, it probably won’t suit your needs.

Full XL

For some added space in your bed, a full XL gives you dimensions of 54 x 80 inches. So, it’s usually big enough for two adults to sleep in. Things can get a bit tight, but this is a popular bed choice if you’re keen to save space. Again, it works best in rooms where you’re limited in space. This bed is also commonly advertised as a double bed by some furniture companies.

It’s worth pointing out there are standard versions of both a twin and a full bed, but these are shorter and more aimed towards children.

Queen

Right, now we move into the bigger beds, and things get a bit complicated. A queen bed actually comes in three varieties:

  • Standard – 60 x 80 inches
  • Olympic – 66 x 80 inches
  • California – 60 x 84 inches

As you can see, all of these options offer some extra width to a double bed and some extra length in a California Queen. So, if you’re quite a tall individual or your partner is bulky, a Queen offers additional room for more comfort. These beds are usually reserved for master bedrooms or bedrooms with a decent amount of space.

King

Lastly, we have king beds. Again, these come in multiple options, though you have one less to choose from:

  • Standard – 76 x 80 inches
  • California – 72 x 84 inches

Overall, this is the most spacious option available to buy right now. They are significantly wider than all the other beds on the market. So, you can only really buy one if you have a substantial amount of space in your bedroom. When paired with some king bedroom sets, these beds provide a very grand design that looks impressive. After all, these beds are literally designed to be fit for a king! If your master bedroom allows it, and you need as much space in bed as possible, it’s a great option.

In conclusion, the bed you choose will mainly depend on your room’s size and who’s sleeping in it. Single people or kids can use a twin bed, while a double is also suitable for one person or a couple. If you need more space or want to fill your room with a bigger bed, go for a queen or a king.
