One of the hardest things to do as a freelancer is get paid. You wouldn’t think so, especially as some freelancers hit the jackpot and find it easy to get clients for work. The problem is that once you do the work, you need to then chase for payment. It’s widely known that getting paid as a freelancer – unless you’re working for a regular company – is hard! You have to change up the way that you write your contracts, change the terms and ensure that clients are aware of how they should be paying you.
The average business can wait up to 10 weeks for a payment, and that’s not going to work if you rely on being paid quickly. The good news is that you can learn how to do your invoicing properly, and you can learn more tricks to get yourself paid on time properly, too. There are so many measures that you can take to avoid being left short, and we’ve got five ways for you below:
- Make sure that your contract has late payment fees. While it’s important to have this detailed in your contract, this should be something you visit with your client when they take you on as a freelancer. You should think about setting late payment fees that cycle upwards and begin within 24 hours of the payment being late. Late payment fees show that you are a professional, and you can then ensure that you show this is something you’re serious about.
- Send your invoices efficiently. There is so much invoicing software out there that can help you with your invoicing, enabling you to keep on top of the bills that you send out to your clients. Invoicing is a big issue with freelancers, and while you’re spending time creating amazing products, you have to dedicate some time to invoicing and charging your clients, too.
- Make your due dates tight. A big thing that many freelancers do is go too liberal with their due dates. You need to tighten these dates and not give so much leeway where possible. It’s common to set a 30 day invoice, but you don’t have to do that! A 2-week invoice is more than enough if you are nervous about being paid on time.
- Make it interesting. You have to remember your clients are busy, so send your invoices that stand out. Add a splash of color and if necessary, a read receipt so that you can be sure that your invoice was received and read by the client. Make it interesting so that they will pay attention to the invoice when it comes in. The invoice template that you use matters here and it’s much easier to do this when you have good software to help. As a freelancer, you have to be okay with taking charge of your finances so that you can succeed.
Being a freelancer is exciting, but it’s also tough enough without being delayed with your payment.
