Do you sometimes feel as though your loveable pooch just gets too excitable? Maybe they just love to jump up and down, or even spin in circles. Either way, these are all signs that your dog is overexcited. The dog will have a lot of excess energy and the only way that their brain knows how to deal with it, is to work it all off physically. It doesn’t have to be this way though, in fact, there are many ways that you can try and curb this behavior if you simply take the right steps.
Do Not Encourage Excitement
When your dog bounds up to you, it is wise for you to discourage their excitement. The worst possible thing that you can do is give them affection. If you give them some affection then you will be telling your dog that it is okay for them to behave this way, and it just isn’t. The best thing that you can do in this situation would be for you to ignore them. Don’t talk to them, don’t give them eye contact and also make sure that you don’t touch them. When they are a little calmer, or able to respond to commands, tell them to sit. When they have done this action, you can then praise and reward them as you usually would. If you do these enough times, then your dog should be able to get to the point where they sit nicely and wait for attention, as opposed to demanding it from anyone who walks in the door.
Encourage them to be Calm
When your dog is in a calm and submissive state, give them attention. If your dog is treat motivated then make sure that you reward them for being calm. If you do this in combination with ignoring their excitable behavior, then you may find that you help them to move to that calmer state faster.
Give them an Outlet
Physical exercise is important, but you still need to work their brain. It may be that you hide treats for them or that you encourage them to find a scent. If you can do this, then you will soon find that you can give them different ways to stimulate their mind. Seek and find games are great here, just make sure that your dog has a leash and collar when performing this exercise. It has to be controlled to stop over-excitement. Wear them Out
Walks are important. It is very easy for you to keep your dog from being over-excited if they do not have the energy to do it in the first place. Walks give your dog a direct form of exercise and it channels their energy while also draining it. Just letting your dog out in the yard is not the kind of activity you need to give them. You need to give them outside stimulation that they do not usually have. If you can do this, then you will soon find that you can get to that calmer state as mentioned above, which you will then reward.
