We all take time off of work, for various reasons. Sometimes it’s one of the days off we have that week, sometimes it’s your vacation period (and thankfully, you get paid for that too!), and sometimes, we book off an extra week here and there, for health or other personal issues. No matter the reason you’re currently sat at home and reading this, rather than at work doing your best to make a buck, there’s a good chance you’re feeling a bit bored and don’t know what to do with yourself.
Human beings like routine, after all. When you break that structure, even for a moment, you can feel a bit lost with your new-found freedom. Well, don’t let yourself squander it! Make sure you’ve got some hints and tricks up your sleeves to properly appreciate your time off of work.
Resting is key during time off work. If you’re someone who needs to take self-care days every now and then, and you’re dealing with some chronic illnesses (whether mental or physical), make sure you actually take the time to rest up. You’re in need of a few days where you just sleep or at least stay in bed for the majority of the time, and that’s your priority right now.
Don’t let yourself feel bad for not getting the whole house cleaned, or for not picking up a new hobby – now’s not the time for those things! They’ll keep until later; a human body needs as much sleep as it can get when you’re a working adult, and that truly does matter.

You deserve a breather, and even if you’ve got the time now to visit both your mother and your sister in the same day, don’t make plans to do so unless you really want to.
Prioritize your time above all else; you need to take care of you before you turn your mind to others. And when a full working life gets in the way of that, a week or two here and there is going to help you get back on track. You want to feel rejuvenated when you go back to work, and that’s only going to happen if you’ve kept your schedule free and allowed yourself to go with the flow. Don’t worry, it’s not as wasteful as a lot of people will have you believe!
Use the Time to Think
And finally, if you’ve got some time to yourself off work, make sure you use it to think about the future. Your mind is going to be clear of working responsibilities for the time being (and if it isn’t, you can work on that too!), and that means now’s the perfect time to invest in yourself. Even if only in theory.
You’ve got a week away from work – turn your professional mobile off, and even put your personal one on ‘do not disturb’, because now’s the time to think about you. Are you doing what you really want to be doing with your career? Do you rate your own job performance? How could you improve, if you want to do so? Is there something else you could be doing that you’d enjoy a lot more? Maybe it’s time for a promotion?
Even when these thoughts can get overwhelming, you’ve got the time and space right now to deal with them. It’s a lot healthier to use a day during your break to think about the future, rather than just barrel into it unprepared.
