You’ve decided to open up your home and welcome a new member into the family with open arms, that’s great. It’s going to be hard work though and you’ve got to be committed. The more time you spend on your pet the more you’ll get out of them. It’s not just as simple as going to the shops and making a purchase. There’s a few things you’ll need to put in place if you haven’t already prepared for your new guest. Let’s have a look at what they could be.
Pet proof your home
Where’s your pet going to be sleeping at night? Are you going to let it roam free in the house? Will it be allowed access to every part of your home? Pets are different from children and will find it more difficult to understand right from wrong. If you’ve got valuable items or expensive furniture it may be wise to keep them out of bounds. Create a space for your pet that they can call their own. A home within your home. That will be their go to comfort zone where they will feel safe. If you have more than one level to your home you may want to block of the stairs with a gate. Keeping one side of the home free from chew and scratch marks. Hair is another problem you may not have thought about. Some pets shed hair regularly. Separating your home with a pet free zone can save you trying to remove hair from all of your good clothes. Another reason it’s a good idea is to get a good night’s sleep. You may choose to allow your pet to sleep in the same bed with you but it’s not a great idea. They may have different sleep patterns to you as a human and keep you up all night.
Now that you’ve sorted out your home your going to want to give your garden a quick inspection. Young pets are like toddlers and they’ll put just about anything in there mouth. Make sure there’s nothing in the garden that they could potentially choke on. Give your yard a good tidy up. You’ll see the benefits too. Who doesn’t want to look out into and spend time in a lovely well taken care of garden?
Ticks and fleas
Ticks and fleas are enemy number one. Your going to want to avoid these troublesome creatures at any cost to save your new friend from a lot of discomfort and pain. Advecta cat fleas treatment and also for dogs will sort out the problem if they are unfortunate enough to have contracted them. Your best bet will be to make sure they don’t get any in the first place. Make sure they don’t enter your home and set up camp in your living room. You can do this by taking care of your garden and the surrounding area. Keep it tidy and maintained. This will leave less places for them to hide. Already got one pet why get another so soon? Be careful to make sure your not inviting any unwanted wildlife into your home. Leaving out food bowls could be attracting feral animals into your yard. They are the worst culprits for tick and flea carrying. If your pet has long hair you may want to consider cutting it shorter for the summer time weather, keeping them cool and making them a more difficult target to latch onto. A lot of owners prevent the large spread of ticks and fleas by using spot-on protection. They’ll use a flea comb or even a brush to go through their pets fur before they enter the home.
Getting a vet
What will you do if your new companion gets sick? If it’s an emergency you’ll need a number to call right away. Find out where the veterinarian in your area is and take your pet along to say hello. You may want to sign up to that practice in case the worst happens and your little friend is feeling unwell. The better the vet knows your pet the better they’re will be able to help if something goes wrong. If you’ve just bought a puppy or a kitten then it may need jabs as soon as possible. Not because they are unwell but these vaccinations will strengthen their immune system and prevent illness and disease. This is a good idea for you as the owner as well as some diseases can spread and be caught by humans too.
Lost of pets love their food, especially dogs. Their stomach is a constant pit of hunger. If you don’t plan ahead carefully they may end up eating you out of house and home. Buy in bulk from your pet store so that you don’t run out. There’s no skipping meals for pets. They’ll let you know just how hungry they are and if they don’t it’s usually a warning sign that something’s wrong with them.
Let your pets enjoy the fresh air every now and again. Cats can usually roam free and return of their own accord but if you’ve got a dog this will be a walk about three times a day. It’s going to be a lot of work, a full time job in a way. Without you they won’t be able to survive. When you are walking your dog it’s a good idea to explore different routes otherwise your little pet could be getting bored. That’s a lot of responsibility. Make sure you’re fully up to the challenge. Still just thinking about getting pet? Check out this post on what you should be doing and thinking about before getting one.
Your pets might not be able to thank you with words but they sure will respond to your kindness with love. They’ll be more than happy that you’ve taken such good care of them and you’ll be happy knowing you’ve stepped up to the mark and provided for them properly.
