Showing Roots is a Lifetime movie, set in a small Southern town called “Whynot”…a town where there are still “right” and “wrong” sides of the track and a place where racisim is prevalent. It’s 1977, and two women come together to form a friendship while working side by side in a salon owned by bleached-blonde beautician, Shirley. Neither of the women necessarily like their boss, but aspiring stylist, Violet is intimidated by her therefore, aims to please her consistently. Both women play the roles set upon them in hopes of achieving their dreams one day until fate puts Violet behind the chair for a desperate client. Although the client is thrilled with the results, Shirley is not. Feeling threatened by Violet’s obvious talent, both women are fired from the salon immediately.
The push out the door gives both Violet and Pearl the drive to go into business for themselves and open a competing salon, “Salt and Pepper.” The salon slowly attracts clients from both sides of the community, forcing the racisim in Whynot to open up even more. The movie plays out while the community has been captivated by the premier of ROOTS on television, which brings up various feelings, emotions and even a bit of anger with the residents of this small town.
Ultimately, Violet and Pearl realize their real dreams, with a message that there are something that can only be learned during a storm…Be sure to pick up this entertaining and thought provoking DVD at Walmart on June 20th!
