oops… look like the mirror has offended you again (source)
When you look in the mirror first thing in the morning, you may not always like the reflection looking back at you. “Mirror mirror on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?” you ask the mirror sarcastically, but you already know the response. Thankfully, mirror’s can’t talk, as they would only ruin any chances of you having some degree of self-esteem as you begin the day. Sighing, you resign yourself to the effects of ageing, and go about your day.
The trouble is, growing older may not be the overarching problem. All the beauty products in the world aren’t going to help you if you indulge in the following bad habits that are proven ways of damaging your skin. Have a look, and consider your lifestyle as you read through them. Before you suffer the indignity of another arrogant mirror, perhaps you can make a change today.
1. Not washing after a swim
Swimming is a wonderful way to exercise, but it’s not so great for your skin. Don’t let this put you off getting into the pool, however, as the answer is simple. Make sure you shower thoroughly when you have finished. Why? It is the chlorine in the water that is terrible for you. It may clean the pool of nasty bacteria, but it dries out your skin and damages your melatonin. A quick shower won’t do, as the chlorine can stick to your skin, so get the soap out and carefully scrub yourself all over for a thorough cleanse.
2. Not curbing your coffee addiction
You may have a cup of coffee first thing in the morning to wake you up, but do you really need to keep supping throughout the day? The caffeine inherent in one of your favourite drinks causes dryness in your skin and brings out wrinkles. If you are desperate for a hot drink, try something decaffeinated, and if you are trying to stay alert throughout the day, a bottle of water will do the trick. If you really do need to get your coffee fix, limit your intake. Stick a small mirror to your coffee cup as a reminder of the possible damage it is doing to you!
3. Not cleaning your makeup off before bed
Yes, we know you are tired when you get to bed, but that’s no excuse to ignore your makeup. Not only will your leftover eye shadow and mascara ruin your bedsheets, but it will clog the pores in your skin, meaning you will wake up in the morning with unsightly pimples and zits. Our advice is this: don’t wait until bedtime to wash away your makeup, as you may be too tired to care. Alternatively, leave some makeup wipes on your pillow, ensuring you have a reminder to give your face a good clean before you catch your z’s.
4. Popping your zits like bubble wrap
Popping bubble wrap is a stress-reliever. Popping zits will add to your stress. Yes, we know you hate acne, but there is a safer way to get rid of the problem. When you pop them with your fingers, you only push the dirt back into your pores, leading to another outbreak later on. Instead, follow the best acne skincare routine which will let you say goodbye to those pesky blemishes once and for all.
- Spending too long in the shower
After a long day, there’s nothing better than spending time under the shower, washing away all the dirt you have built up during the day, as well as your cares and worries. Bliss. Well, not quite! Of course, having a shower is good for you, but spending too long in the water (especially if it’s hot) will cause damage to your skin. The outer layer of your skin is stripped away under hot water, and it will become dry and itchy. So, if you need to get a shower every day, cool the temperature a little, and set yourself a time limit. As soon as your skin starts going red, get out!
- Not drinking enough during the day
We told you to cut down on coffee, so don’t get your hopes up that we have suddenly changed our mind about that. No, we are talking about drinking other liquids, including water, sugar-free juices and non-addictive drinks. This is to keep you hydrated, as becoming dehydrated results in parched and dry skin. No matter how busy your day, have something to drink close at hand. Not only will your skin look better, but you will feel less tired as well.
7. Eating the wrong food
We all love a takeaway now and again, but every night? Then there’s the problem of microwave meals. They may feature healthy foods on the packaging, but most of the goodness will be zapped out of them when cooking in your portable oven. You need to eat foods with nutritional value, not only for health reasons but for your skin as well. In short, if you eat too much pizza, you will end up looking like one. So, eat foods that are good for your skin, and you will feel healthier too.
8. Going crazy at the makeup counter
You want to look beautiful on your big night out, so it’s perfectly natural that you will want to try all the products that the beauty counter has to offer. That’s fine unless you suddenly discover you are allergic to a particular product. Say goodbye to that social event you were looking forward too! So, here’s the thing. If you want to test makeup, don’t use your face. You can still get an idea of how a colour will suit your skin by dabbing a little on your hand. If you do get an allergic reaction, at least it won’t be your face that’s the give away!
Did any of the above sound familiar to you? If so, you may have found the reason behind your mirror’s rude reaction in the morning. Change up your lifestyle a little, take better care of your skin, and you won’t be afraid to set foot before your mirror ever again!
