There are studies after studies that demonstrate to us just how much having a pet dog can help with our stress levels. Some Colleges like the University in Miami even offer dog therapy during busy finals and exam times, where students can play with dogs as a way to reduce their stress levels. So if you are someone that is prone to feeling stressed, then getting a dog could be a good thing for you.
But what about the other way around? Can dogs get stressed? The thing is that they can. And as a dog owner or dog ‘parent’ it is important to be aware of this and help them with it. After all, if you’ve got a happy and healthy dog, it will help you to be happy and healthy too. But how can you train your dog to make your life less stressful? Here are a few ideas that you can try.
Use Positive Training Methods
There are a lot of training methods out there that can use some harsh methods and it can make your dog feel uncomfortable and even vulnerable. Like with humans, you’re not going to get the bet out of them when treating them in this way. These kinds of methods can stress your dog out and lead to them not being trained properly, which will make things more stressful for you. So use positive things to help them and it will help you.
Think About the Present
If you’re trying to train a dog, then it is important to focus on the present. The immediate outcomes shouldn’t matter too much; if you rush things, then it could be detrimental. So be patient and take your time. Focus and praise the things that they are doing immediately and then go from there. If you have an emotional support or therapy dog, then you need to realize that they will need to be trained in completely different ways. There are different emotional support dog laws, because they are different to the laws of owning a dog as a pet. Both kinds of dog will need training, but understanding how each works, can help you to train them in the best way. They each have different responsibilities.
Use a Walker
If you are out for a lot of the day, and can only get out to walk your dog before or after work, then it can reduce your stress, as well as your dogs, if they are able to get out and about during the day. If you have a lot of space and land, then you could set up a kennel yourself. But if you don’t, then it could be a good idea to hire a dog walker. It can help your dog to be happier, and it will stop any unwanted accidents from happening if they’re taken outside in the middle of the day.
