Memorial Day Cocktails to Kick Off the Unofficial Start of Summer

How do you celebrate the beginning of summer? For a lot of people, the kick-off to the summer season happens during Memorial Day weekend. Traditionally, this is the time to transition from spring into the freedom and warmth of the new season but in addition, this patriotic holiday is designated to show thanks for those who have served this country so that we may enjoy freedom.

If your unofficial summer celebration includes a gathering of friends and family or a backyard BBQ, then there are a few things needed to make the day memorable and fun...cocktails! Sauza 901 and Hornitos Tequila Mixologist, Eddie Buckingham has prepared a few patriotic and refreshing cocktail recipes that are sure to impress the entire crowd. So, fly your American Flag, fire up the grill, attend a fun parade or do anything else that sparks your interest on Memorial Day, but remember to enjoy the day and celebrate the best way that you know how! Happy Memorial Day!

Mexican Vacation
  • 2 parts Sauza 901 Tequila
  • 1 part triple sec
  • 1 part lemon juice
  • Splash agave syrup
  • Mexican pilsner
Preparation: Combine all ingredients excluding Mexican pilsner in mixing glass over ice. Shake vigorously and strain into chilled glass. Top with Mexican pilsner beer. 

Sauza 901 Peachy Keen
  • 2 parts Sauza 901 Tequila
  • 1 part triple sec
  • 1 part peach schnapps
  • 1 part grapefruit juice
  • Thyme sprig for garnish
Preparation: Combine all ingredients over ice in a cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously and strain into a rocks glass. Garnish with a thyme sprig.

Hornitos LeMANade
  • 2 parts Hornitos Plata Tequila
  • 1 1/2 parts ginger ale
  • 1 1/2 parts fresh lemonade
  • 1/2 part fresh lime juice
  • Lemon peel for garnish
Preparation: Combine all ingredients in a highball glass and serve. Garnish with a lemon peel.

Black Ginger
  • 1 part Hornitos Black Barrel Tequila
  • 1/3 part simple syrup
  • 1/3 part fresh lemon juice
  • Rosemary sprig
  • Top with ginger beer
Preparation: Lightly muddle one rosemary sprig in a mixing glass with ice and combine the remainder of the ingredients except ginger beer. Shake vigorously and strain into a highball glass over fresh ice. Top with ginger beer and garnish with one rosemary sprig.
