I've been coloring my hair for as long as I can remember and have had colors from blonde highlights to deep plum and everything in between. I love changing it up and probably color my hair more often than I rearrange the furniture in my home!
One drawback to coloring my hair is that the color tends to fade quickly and unless I use color protectant products on my hair, it only looks its best for a short while. Ugh! So...the solution is to use the correct products on your color treated hair (or any type of hair for that matter!)
The first thing to know is that most "box" colors that you find in the store aren't going to last as long as professional color. Sad, but true! I'm also guilty of buying a box of color whenever I can't afford to go to the salon, but just know that it's a short-term fix. Don't get me wrong, even salon color doesn't last forever, but that along with the right products and a few tips will help you get the most out of your gorgeous color!
1. Don't wash your hair the day you're coloring.
I'm not suggesting your apply color over dirty hair, but simply wash it a day or two before you plan to have it colored. By doing this you're removing any build up of products and allowing the color to work better on your hair due to the natural oils.
2 Deep conditioning.
Again, not the day of your color, but a few days before, use a deep conditioner. (This is actually something you should do every now and then). Hair tends to hold color much better if the hair is in good condition and properly moisturized. Dry, frizzy hair just doesn't do it!
3. No HOT water.
Hot water is not only bad for your skin but your hair as well. I love a nice hot shower, but in order to make the most of my overly dry skin and hair, I take it down a few notches to a lukewarm temperature. I do this all of the time, no matter if I have colored hair, highlighted hair or I'm rockin' my natural shade!
4. Use the right shampoo and conditioner.
Whether you color your hair or not, using the right products on your hair is a must! Most hair care products are made with ingredients that are beneficial to certain hair types therefore, giving you the most from the products you are using. I always use a color protecting shampoo and conditioner that protects and prolongs the life of my color while also nourishing my hair.
I also use a deep protective moisturizing treatment 2 - 3 times per week right after my regular conditioner. This is my "deep conditioning treatment" and helps to repair and moisturize my hair and improves the texture while making it more managable. This isn't a step that will take lots of your time, it's fairy quick and easy and the results are amazing! My hair is super soft and shiny!
If you hair happens to be really damaged, you may opt to use an color protecting leave-in oil treatment instead. Not only will this treatment prolong the life of your color but it will also help to repair damage from over styling and heat damage.
5. Styling Products
I don't straighten my hair on a daily basis but my daughter doesn't go one day without using her straightener. The constant heat on her hair damages it faster than anything so she uses a leave-in therapy spray for color treated hair. All of that heat will also fade color pretty fast but with this leave-in spray your hair is protected from the hot tools as it repairs and smooths your hair.
Her and I both use a color protecting finishing spray on our hair to hold the style throughout the day. We have a favorite that contains blueberry extracts that is rich in anti-oxidants and helps with healthy hair growth.
Ultimately, spending a bit more on your hair care products will pay off in the long run. Your color will last longer and your hair will be healthier and look amazing! I recently discovered a brand that I love and they offer a complete line of eco-friendly color protecing hair care products that are gluten-free, sulfate-free, anti-oxidant rich and formulated with Argon Oil and Olive Oil. Mastey is a family owned business that has been creating healthy and beautiful hair for over 40 years.
