Not only does this annual holiday symbolize the end of the summer season, but it was created to pay tribute to the contributions and achievements of the American workers. Labor Day was implemented in the late 19th century during the height of the Industrial Revolution and become a federal holiday in 1894. Celebrated with parties, family gatherings, parades and many other community events, Labor Day is considered a "working man's holiday" that is recognized on the first Monday in September for people from all walks of life in the working community of America. Oregon was the first state to make Labor Day a holiday in 1887.
In the 1800's the average American worked 12 hour days and seven days per week (Ouch!), with children as young as 5 years old working in factories and mines.
Labor Day was celebrated in Canada before coming to the United States
Before becoming a holiday, Labor Day began as a demonstration demanding rights for workers.
In 1882 the average American worker only received time off for Christmas, 4th of July and every other Sunday (26 days/year). Now 130 years later, the average American worker has about 126 days off.
So, no matter what type of work you do, take some time to relax and enjoy family and friends and spend this last summer hurrah doing whatever it is that makes you happy, including mixing up a few Labor Day inspired cocktails!
- 2 parts Hornitos Plata Tequila
- 1/2 part Agave Nectar
- 2 parts Coconut Water
- 3 Dashes Angostura Bitters
- Lime Peel
Preparation: Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice, shake vigorously and strain over fresh ice. Garnish with a lime peel.
The Work Horse
- 1 1/2 parts Hornitos Plata Tequila
- 4 parts Mexican Lager
- 1/3 part Simple Syrup
- 1 slice Jalapeno
- Salt Rim
Preparation: Muddle jalapeno in a glass with a salted rim, combine remainder of ingredients except Mexican Lager in a shaker. Shake vigorously over fresh ice and add Mexican Lager.
- 1 1/4 parts Hornitos Black Barrel Tequila
- 1/4 part Agave
- 1/2 part Lemon Juice
- Lemon Wedge
Preparation: Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice. Shake vigorously and strain over fresh ice. Garnish with a lemon wedge.
