They are also versatile enough to be work with jeans, leggings, or a skirt (as Amanda did!)...the sky is the limit.

Living with Hypothyroidism

Links to this post

When I was 17 years old, my doctor found a small nodule on my thyroid. It was about the size of a peanut M&M. It was removed and found to be benign, thank goodness. I was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism (over-active thyroid gland) and put on medication to control my thyroid hormones.

Being young and virtually uninformed, I did not keep up with my prescription and it was years before I had my thyroid checked again. Years later I would notice that when I was eating or drinking, things always seemed to "go down the wrong pipe"...leaving me choking and coughing.

I did finally ask to have my thyroid area checked when pregnant with my fourth child, Tristan. My ENT Doctor did discover three large nodules around in my neck, one of which was over seven inches long and pushing against my windpipe. That would definitely explain the choking and coughing!

After many tests and a biopsy, it was decided that I should have surgery to remove not only the nodules, but possibly my entire thyroid, if found to be cancerous. I was pregnant so surgery was not ideal, but due to some test results, surgery was a must for me and my doctor did not feel comfortable waiting until after the baby was born.

So, four years ago, I had surgery to remove the pesky nodules and cancerous cells were discovered on my thyroid, which was also removed. My recovery was not easy as I was not able to take some medications and was very tired. To make a long story shorter, my Endocrinologist at the time, was not a fan of Radioactive Iodine procedures to kill any remaining thyroid cells. So now, every six months, I go in for an ultrasound of my neck area and have blood work quite often.

Right now I do have two small nodules on the left side of my neck and my ENT is monitoring them for growth and other things. We shall see in August if another surgery is necessary or if they can be left alone. Since being diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer and Hypothyroidism,(under-active thyroid gland) countless people have said to me, "At least you had a good cancer" or "If you had to have cancer, Thyroid Cancer is the best one to have." I understand that the type of Thyroid Cancer that I had is not an aggressive cancer, but is there really a "good cancer?" Those statements always stun me and leave me speechless.

Not only do I now live with the fear of reoccurring Thyroid Cancer, but I also deal with my Hypothyroid condition, a very misunderstood condition that many people live with but those who don't really don't understand. Yes, I am on medication that is supposed to replace the hormones that I lack, but no, it's not always ideal and does not seem to have replaced having an actual thyroid. There are many symptoms associated with Hypothyroidism:

  • Increased sensitivity to cold
  • Fatigue
  • Joint or muscle pain
  • Pale or dry skin
  • Sadness or depression
  • Thin, brittle hair and fingernails
  • Weakness
  • Weight gain
  • Decreased smell or taste
  • Hoarseness of the voice
  • Puffy hands, face and feet
  • Slow speech
  • Thickening of the skin
  • Thinning of eyebrows
  • Memory problems
  • Constipation
  • Irregular or heavy menstrual periods
I can honestly say that out of the symptoms listed above, I suffer from thirteen of them on a regular basis.

In addition to the bothersome things happening to your mind and body, family members don't really understand or even believe it at times. I can't remember how many times I've had to explain myself to someone and try to convince them that I am not lazy...I suffer from fatigue, losing weight isn't as simple as "working out" or "cutting back"...my metabolism is basically at a stand-still! I have tried many ways to lose the unwanted weight and it's not easy and it's very frustrating. I'm not an "air-head"...my memory is terrible! My skin is super dry. I use lots of moisturizers, lotions, creams, anything to battle the dry, ugly skin. Nothing helps long-term.

Those are just a few of my frustrations, but I can tell you that it's everyday. It doesn't just go away. I've had my medication adjusted over and over again, with the same results. Sometimes I wonder if the medication is actually helping me in anyway at all?

All I know is that until I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism, I had no idea how cherished my thyroid was to me. Thank goodness for the support of numerous online groups and blogs, filled with members who are all going through the same experiences. If someone you know has any type of thyroid disease, please do your research and find out what they are going through...trust me, it's not just all in their head. It's real.

How to Stop Talking and Get Things Done

Links to this post

One of my biggest pet peeves is not getting things done.

We all love the talking phase of doing. We love talking about that book we want to write, the project we will take on, the habit we will break, the new habit we will take on, or the next brand new thing we will try.

Yet, when we get right down to it, more often than not, we think of excuses to avoid doing. Here let me help - it's too much money, there's not enough time, it takes too much effort, no one will go along, you have too much to do, too many family members will feel left out, there is another apocalypse coming, etc.

Today, let's break the habit of breaking your habit. I will address each excuse I've mentioned (aside from the apocalypse) and tell you how you can conquer each excuse along the way (and any others you might think up).

Excuse # 1: It's too much money.

I felt this way recently about a new project I wanted to take on. I had my sights set on redesigning a friend’s dorm, and couldn't even bring myself to buy the college dorm bedding. I literally talked about doing this project for months, and probably longer to be honest. My biggest excuse? The money. I researched the supplies and realized I will probably end up spending hundreds on this project (hello credit card bills). I wanted to reduce my debt, so this project took a back seat.

Yet, this weekend, I finally got started. What changed? I decided to take it a little at a time. If I cut back on the extra cup of coffee I get each afternoon (which amounts to about $3 a day, $21 a week, $84 a month, at the very least), I can use that extra money to put towards this new project.

Think about the ways you can save (big or small), and put that extra money to your new project fund. Also, don't look at the cost of the whole project. Look at the little bit you'll be spending at a time. When I broke it down, it didn't seem like that much when I break it down a little at a time.

Excuse # 2: There's not enough time.
This may be true and I won't deny how busy you really are. Trust me, I know. I work 40 hours a week, and extra 10 to 15 hours a week on the various writing assignments and part-time gigs I have on my plate. The last thing I need is yet another project that will take up more of my time. And if you have children, you have even less time.

But let's really be honest here. Can you give yourself one hour of "you" time?

Before you guffaw at me and give me another excuse about why you couldn't, think about that question. One hour of you time doesn't have to be all at once. Do you get at least a half hour lunch at work? Can you set your clock 15 minutes earlier? Can you stay up 20 minutes later? Yes, this means you will lose sleep and your little bit of free time during the day, but if you want to conquer a new project you've put off, these time sacrifices can add up. You will be shocked on how much you accomplish.

Excuse # 3: It takes too much effort.

Anything new takes a lot of effort. Why?

Because it's new. It takes up to 8 weeks to get used to a new habit you are adding to your life. Make this new project a new habit and add it to your daily or weekly schedule. After a while you will find it is still taking a effort, but not nearly as awful as you thought it would be.

Excuse # 4: No one will go along.

So you want to start volunteering at your community garden, but no one will go along to offset that awkward feeling of groups and new experiences. You want to start that knitting club, but something about going alone feels pretty pathetic.

These are all very understandable excuses. But yes, they are excuses. Remember when you were little and you went into second grade terrified you wouldn't make friends? Well, the second you complimented someone's backpack or sparkly pen, best friends were made. It may not be as easy to make a friend, but take on any new experience like the 2nd grade. It will be awkward and you may be alone, but just think of the stories you will be able to tell once you conquer it (and if anyone asks why you are travelling alone, just say you are on assignment for a local newspaper).

Excuse # 5: Family members (or friends or roommates or pets) will feel left out.

This is an unusual problem and uncommonly common. I know the feeling. You want to spend your Saturday refinishing that chair, but your children keep interrupting the experience. You want to start that vegetable garden, but something about being in and out all day makes you feel guilty about missing out on all those homework questions.

Time to put the big girl or big boy grown up pants and have a difficult conversation. No, don't think up another excuse on why they can't go (there's only so many hour long doctor's appointments you can have, you know). Break down and explain to them that you are having a "finding yourself" type of year and need that time away. Schedule that time if you need.

It won't be easy, but it's the best chance to really tackle the doing part of your to do list. Otherwise, two weeks in with your ball and chain in tow, you will be sure to quit.

Brownie Brittle Review & Giveaway!

Links to this post

How many times have you made brownies and tried to make sure that you get the "edge" with the crispy part of the brownie? That is totally ME! I crispy part is my favorite!

I was able to review this awesome product called Brownie Brittle from Sheila G's...the Original Brownie Brittle Company. I received Chocolate Chip and Toffee flavors and they are delicious!

Like me, Sheila was particularly fond of the crispy edges of the brownie, in fact on many an afternoon, she would walk through the bakery gathering the brittle batter off the sides of the sheet pans as the brownies cooled in their racks. It had that same rich chocolate taste, but with an amazing crunch! That's where it all began and now we can all enjoy this amazing snack called Brownie Brittle!

2013 KIA Sportage SX Review!!

Links to this post

This past week I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to test drive and review a 2013 KIA Sportage SX. I owned a 2001 KIA Sportage a few years ago, but I have to admit, KIA has come a long way since then!

2013 KIA Sportage ~ Signal Red

The 2013 KIA Sportage Turbo AWD is an amazing car to say the least! When the car was delivered, I was as excited as a child on Christmas morning. The color was perfect...Signal Red...and it looks so sporty, not at all like the little Sportage I remember driving.  The turbo charged AWD 2.0 engine has awesome power...the AWD system uses electronic sensors to monitor road conditions, and then for enhanced traction and control, helps to distribute power to the appropriate wheels. Speaking of wheels, the KIA Sportage SX comes with standard 18 inch tires and Alloy Wheels.

Standard Alloy Wheels                        Push Button Start

Inside there are so many cool features, but I think my favorite would have to be the Push Button Start with Smart Key. The Smart Key Remote offers the convenience of locking and unlocking your car, as well as starting the engine and turning it off without ever removing the Smart Key from your purse or pocket.

I love the console and so did my family! They especially liked the Bluetooth wireless technology and the USB input jack so that they were able to connect their iPhones and listen to their own music playlists. This amazing car was also equipped with a Voice Command Navigation System, Premium UVO Powered by Microsoft Infotainment System. This system is beyond what you would expect from most vehicles. In addition to the ability to connect personal devices, there is a Rear View Camera (so cool!!) with Back Up Warning System so if you're on the verge of hitting something, the car will let you know!

Voice Command!

The 2013 KIA Sportage is very roomy inside, with plenty of room for a small family. I was able to transport myself, my husband, my daughter and two sons in complete comfort. The boys love the fact that the car not only had a panoramic sunroof in the front seat but there was also one for the backseat passengers. The cargo area was very spacious, I went grocery shopping and was able to fit everything into the car with no problems, and for a family of five, I really shop! There is even a removable cargo cover available if needed.

                                           Backseat                                           Cargo Area

 Front Seats

The seats were extremely comfortable, all black leather with exceptional features, especially for the driver. Not only did the driver seat have built-in heat capabilities, like the passenger seat, but also Air-Cooled seating! Who wouldn't appreciate the luxury of an air-cooled seat on a hot day? I sure do! I live in Texas and when it's hot...it's HOT! With this fabulous feature, you can ride nice and cool, no sweaty back or legs.

All in all, the 2013 KIA Sportage SX is well worth the listed price of $32,400.  The estimated MPG is 20/25 with a 15.3 gallon fuel tank.

Visit your nearest KIA dealer to take a closer look at the KIA Sportage or visit KIA online.

I feel very honored to be able to review this vehicle and want to thank KIA and the guys at STI for allowing me the privilege of driving this car all week!

Disclosure: I received one or more of the above products from the KIA MOTOR TEAM, at no charge, for review purposes only. However, all opinions are entirely my own.

Microsoft Office 365 REVIEW!!

Links to this post
I was very excited to receive the new Microsoft Office 365 Home Premium software for review. Although I was very comfortable with my older version of Microsoft Office, I'm always eager to try something new and have the latest options available to me on my computer.

After downloading my new software to my computer, which was a very quick and easy process, I began to explore! I admit that at first I was completely lost and a little overwhelmed by the brand new features, but as I began to use my favorite Microsoft applications, I realized that they were still the user friendly applications that I love, only better!

With a single subscription to Office 365 Home Premium, an entire household can access the software. I was able to set up 5 devices with my subscription, including my laptop and tablet. Each family member can sign in with their own individual Microsoft account using their own settings and accessing their individual documents, but only one subscription is needed and includes the following:
  • All Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, Outlook, Access and Publisher.
  • The ability to use Office on up to 5 PC's or Macs shared among the users in the household.
  • Additional SkyDrive storage (20GB over the 7GB that are free).
  • 60 minutes of Skype world calling per month.
  • Premium licenses that are always up to date with the latest features and services released.

As a blogger, one of my favorite features is that I can publish blog posts from Microsoft Publisher. I can edit, add photos, change colors and fonts with ease. The Publisher application allows me to save my blog posts to my computer, even as an HTML code. I never need to worry about losing my blog posts due to something out of my control online, because all of my posts are saved exactly where I want them to be.

Microsoft Office 365 allows me to create a contact data base, using Access, for all of my personal and business related contacts. I can stay organized using OneNote, which is awesome for me. I was constantly making handwritten notes for blog reviews, posts, deadlines and other important information and ended up with scraps of paper all over my desk or a notebook filled with my notes. The problem with those handwritten notes is that they were easily misplaced which was a huge pet peeve for me. Now by entering all of my notes on my computer, everything is precisely where it should be when I need it.

I could go on and on about the amazing features that Microsoft Office 365 offers, but ultimately, this software has made my life so much easier and much more organized. I can't imagine going back to anything else.

Photo Frame Clock Review!

I love receiving items from I Want One of Those for review!
My most recent review was for a really cool Photo Frame Clock. I love to display pictures of my family, especially my children, so this clock was an awesome product in my eyes!

The clock is available in black (my choice) or a more invigorating design...the multi-color version with frames in pink, red, green, blue, white and several other bright colors.
